Federal Constitutional Court: Kaufhold elected Vice President of the Constitutional Court

After months of hanging, everything goes very quickly. The day before, the Bundestag chose three new constitutional judges. Now the Federal Council had the floor.

The Federal Council elected the new constitutional judge Ann-Katrin Kaufhold as Vice President of the Federal Constitutional Court. One day after the judge election in the Bundestag, the state chamber unanimously made the decision. Kaufhold thus becomes Vice President next to court president Stephan Harbarth.

The Bundestag had appointed Kaufhold, Sigrid Emmenegger and Günter Spinner on Thursday as new judges in Karlsruhe. All three received the necessary two -thirds majority. Like Emmenegger, Kaufhold was nominated by the Social Democrats, Spinner from the Union.

With the votes in the Bundestag and now in the Federal Council, the government parties have succeeded in ending a monthly hanging game. The first attempt was the election in July in the Bundestag. The Union had not been able to ensure the necessary majority for the SPD candidate Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf. The outrage in the SPD was great, the coalition was in a crisis mood. Brosius-Gersdorf withdrew after a thinking period. Emmenegger took up in her place.
