During his first term, Donald Trump fired the FBI boss. Now there is an indictment against him – and the President is rejoiced. But James Comey defends himself. His message: “I’m not afraid.”
After massive pressure from US President Donald Trump on the judiciary, a jury jury charged the former FBI director James Comey, among other things, for alleged false statements. The Ministry of Justice announced that the 64-year-old was also accused of hindering an investigation of the congress. While Trump made no secret of his joy over the indictment, his adversary defended himself against the allegations – in a video spread on Instagram, Comey emphasizes: the procedure of the Ministry of Justice “breaks my heart, but I have great confidence in the Federal Court of Justice, and I am innocent”.
The indictment follows only a few days after Trump had emphasized his Minister of Justice Pam Bondi on social media to proceed against people he regarded as an enemy. The president complained that a lot of talk but nothing was done – and expressly called Comey.
Comey led investigations into the Russia affair
In 2013, Comey was made the director of the Federal Police FBI by the then US President Barack Obama. In Trump’s first term, he investigated Russian influence on the US elections in 2016 and possible connections between Moscow and members from Trump’s campaign team. In 2017, Comey was released by Trump in connection with the ongoing investigations at the time.
After that, Robert Mueller, even FBI boss, was used as a special investigator until 2013. He found no evidence that there had been secret agreements between the Trump election team and representatives of Russia before the election. However, Trump Mueller does not disability the judiciary of the judiciary. Nevertheless, Trump considered Mueller’s report as a relief – he repeatedly described the investigation as a politically motivated “witch hunt”.
“Fear is the tool of a tyrant”
Comey said in the video message published on Thursday evening that he has known for years that it has consequences when Trump was offering her forehead. “Someone I love very much recently said that fear is a tyrant’s tool – and it is right, but I am not afraid, and I hope you don’t have any either.” In the camera, he directed the appeal to get involved and choose because the country’s fate depends on it.
From the previously published court documents for the indictment, it is not in detail what exactly Comey is accused of. It only says that in autumn 2020 he knowingly made a false statement before the Justice Committee of the US Senate – and also lied to a senator in this committee by claiming not approving anyone at the FBI as an anonymous source in media reports about an investigation by the authority. According to the broadcaster NBC News, the investigation in question also revolved around Trump. Comey accuses the indictment of having instructed someone at the FBI as a source of the media report in question.
Trump celebrates indictment
US presidents traditionally attach great importance not to raise no doubt about the independence of the judiciary. Trump has already broken with many customs. Critics accuse him of influencing the judiciary and law enforcement authorities with his power as President and instrumentalizing for political purposes.
Trump had his request to act to the Minister of Justice a few days ago with the call formulated in capitalized call “Justice has to act, now !!!” provided. After announcing the indictment, he now also announced Truth Social: “Justice in America!” He also described Comey as a corrupt and “one of the worst people to whom this country was ever exposed”.
Comey’s successor speaks of corruption
The current FBI boss Kash Patel, whom Trump had installed after his election victory, commented on the indictment with the words that “corrupt” ex-leaders had used the federal law enforcement authorities as a “weapon”. As a result, the reputation of once respected institutions was damaged and the public’s trust was shaken. Critics accuse Patel that he was not an independent FBI boss, but rather in Trump’s agents and without the necessary qualifications to his current position.
In a joint statement with Patel, Justice Minister Bondi said that nobody was above the law. The indictment reflects the determination of her ministry to hold all those to “abuse their position of power to deceive the American people”. Like Patel, Bondi is also faced with the accusation of having made an independent institution in effectively the president of the president and bending Trump’s diet.
Trump lawyer replaces prosecutor
The public prosecutor, which was integrated into the Causa Comey, had made the headlines on days ago because prosecutor Erik Siebert had to go. According to media reports, he had refused to pursue the case against Comey. Trump used an employee of the White House as a successor, who was one of his personal lawyers, but according to media reports, but has no specialist expertise for the job. Immediately after the post was taken over, she was now driving the indictment against Comey.
