In order to make the Bundeswehr fit for the future, Germany must end its “security policy according to the cash situation”, which has been practiced for years, according to a position paper by the Lower Saxony CDU, which is available to the German Press Agency.
“As the escalation of the Ukraine conflict clearly shows, Russia is redefining its role as a great power. The Russian armed forces have significantly gained in clout and performance.” At the same time, Moscow repeatedly exhausts NATO’s ability to react and its will to defend itself.
If NATO wants to be credible as an effective alliance, it must visibly strengthen its deterrent presence against Russia in Central and Eastern Europe. “The reintroduction of conscription is a decisive signal to ensure effective military deterrence and alliance capability by Germany,” writes state party leader Bernd Althusmann. The Bundeswehr has a key role to play.
“In order to make the Bundeswehr fit for the future, general compulsory service with the possibility of conscription must be gradually reintroduced, taking into account training capacities,” demands Althusmann. In particular, the armored combat troops would have to be significantly expanded and reactivated.
