So far, the Chancellor has held back with comments on the rule of law and democracy in the United States. He changes that now.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has commented on increasing pressure on judiciary and freedom of expression in the United States. “This country has changed so fundamentally over the past few years, perhaps for decades that rules are no longer being met, the parliamentary democracy is under pressure, which is freedom of expression in questions, repression is exercised to independence the judiciary,” he said in the “Black Ecosystem Summit” in front of entrepreneurs.

Merz sees long -term change

The Chancellor also said that he does not consider this to be a temporary development. “The changes that we see in the United States of America have not come overnight and they won’t go again during the day and they are not suddenly disappearing with the next elections.”

The rule -based order is not only questioned by authoritarian political systems. “Unfortunately, it also applies to America,” said Merz, emphasizing how much is connected to the country. The Chancellor was the chairman of the Atlantic Bridge, an association that is committed to German -American relations, and in the meantime worked for an American company – the investment company Blackrock.

Cases Comey and Kimmel make worries bigger

Critics accuse the government around President Donald Trump, they specifically restrict freedom of expression and have unpleasant opponents pursued legally. It was only on Thursday that after a massive pressure from Trump on the judiciary, his adversary and ex-FBI boss James Comey were charged. The temporary break of the well-known late night talker Jimmy Kimmel, who Trump had expressly celebrated, also made concerns about freedom of expression in the United States.
