EU countries want to start building “drone wall”

The EU alert drones in Denmark and the eastern flank. Now a high-tech protective shield is to be created. Can be learned from Ukraine?

The plans for the establishment of a comprehensive drone defense system on the eastern flank of the EU are gaining driving according to the recent mysterious events in Denmark. As the EU defense industrial commissioner Andrius Kubilius announced, a video conference with defense ministers agreed to start implementing the concept. According to this, a “drone wall” is primarily intended to be built, which enables the recognition, pursuing and intercept of unmanned air bodies with advanced skills.

Kubilius said that at the EU summit in October he would still secure the political support of the heads of state and government. Afterwards, a detailed technical roadmap will be determined together with national experts and mobilizing Europe’s defense industry. EU instruments should also be used for financing. “The protective shield for the eastern flank (Eastern Flank Watch) with the drone wall as the centerpiece will benefit all of Europe,” emphasized Kubilius. In an interview by the Euractiv website, he had recently said that the wall could be built up within a year.

According to the EU Commissioner, Defense Minister of the EU front-state Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Romania took part in the video conference. Also included were the EU foreign commissioner Kaja Kallas and representatives of Hungary, Slovakia, the Danish EU Council Presidency and NATO. In a separate, the Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Schmyhal taught the EU round about Ukrainian experiences in the defense against Russian drones.

The concept for a much more effective drone defense on the EU East flank has been working for months. From the planner’s point of view, the massive penetration of Russian drones into the airspace of Poland two and a half weeks ago, from the planner’s perspective, ultimately showed how necessary. The events in Denmark are also considered to be further evidence, where drones have been paralyzed for hours.
