Donald Trump wants to tip the right to become a US citizen through birth

The government of US President Donald Trump is driving its advance against birthright for US citizenship. The Ministry of Justice submitted two appeals against judgments of low authorities to the Supreme Court, which had blocked a corresponding arrangement of Trump. The US President signed the decree in January immediately after returning to the White House.

The measure that is intended to restrict the birth law for certain groups is at the center of its tougher gait against immigration. The application for an appeal states that the decisions of the lower courts have declared an extremely important policy for the president in a way that invalidated the safety of the borders.

The ministry argued that hundreds of thousands of people were awarded the privilege of US citizenship without a legal basis. With the controversial decree, Trump had instructed the federal authorities to interpret the birth law on citizenship more strictly. According to this, citizens are to be refused in the United States if they do not have at least one parent who is the US citizen or the owner of a “Green Card”.

A number of lawsuits were submitted against Trump’s arrangement. Among other things, it argues that the decree violates a law anchored in the 14th constitutional addition, according to which every person born in the USA receives citizenship. “This arrangement is illegal – point – and no maneuver from the government will change that,” said plaintiff lawyer Cody Wofsy of the Reuters news agency.

The government in Washington is countering this, the 14th constitutional addition does not apply to immigrants who are illegally in the country. It is also not valid for people who only have a temporary right of residence such as studying. The previous interpretation acts as a “strong incentive for illegal migration” and led to “birth tourism”, the court documents said.

The Ministry of Justice asked the Supreme Court to take up the case in its new session period from October 6th. The Supreme Court, who has a conservative majority of six to three votes, has repeatedly faced the Trump government’s side in the past, also on migration policy issues.
