The Bundeswehr is digitized. Units in use should be networked in such a way that data exchange takes place between all participants in real time. The change is difficult.
According to a media report, there are delays in the Bundeswehr’s planned digitization of radio and communication in the Bundeswehr. As the “Spiegel” reports, there were problems with new radio systems in tests in May. The operating interface turned out to be so complicated that soldiers could only build radio groups with several participants. The radio connection was also sometimes not stable.
On request, the Federal Ministry of Defense announced that one could not comment on detailed information for reasons of military security. “These could enable conclusions to be drawn about existing, future or currently missing capacities, skills or the operational readiness of the Bundeswehr.” It is in the essence of a test phase that questions arose that required post -tax in the project plan.
Bundeswehr major project as “Operation on the open heart”
The switch to new digital radio technology is part of the large project “Digitization of Land -based operations”. It is not just about the exchange of outdated by new, digital radio devices, but also a continuous digital management and information system for land forces, according to the ministry.
The goal is to network soldiers, vehicles and battle stalls, so that, for example, positioning cards, position data and commands can be exchanged in real time.
The ministry speaks of one of the most extensive and complex conversions in the Bundeswehr. It is a complicated “open heart surgery” because it is parallel to the regular operational, practice and training company.
