Donald Trump sends the military into more and more US cities. His latest goal is Portland, but the city and the state vehemently defend themselves against it.
Portland and the US state of Oregon defend themselves in the city with a lawsuit against a military operation announced by President Donald Trump. This is illegal, according to the application. With the lawsuit, the city and state want to stop military operation by court.
The state of Oregon, in which Portland is located, refers to its sovereign authority to manage its own law enforcement and the national guard. In the United States, the national guards are subject to the respective states. Only the capital Washington is an exception – there the soldiers are subject to the president.
In addition to Trump, the lawsuit submitted to a court in Oregon is also directed against Pentagon boss Pete Hegseth, whom the US government recently renamed “War Minister” and against Minister of Homeland Protection Minister Kristi Noem.
Portland wants to prevent the use of the military
In the lawsuit, the US government is accused of convening 200 members of the National Guard in Oregon on Sunday. With the lawsuit, the city and state want to have the military operation prevented by court. They consider the use of the soldiers for civil prosecution as a violation.
A court in California had recently banned the US government such a deployment of soldiers in Los Angeles.
In the United States, the governors of a state usually have control over the national guard. If there is a war or national emergencies, the US President can take command. The National Guard is a military reserve unit and part of the US armed forces. For example, it can be used for natural disasters, unrest or emergencies inside.
Trump had called for use in Portland
The US President had written on Truth on Saturday, Hegseth should provide as many soldiers as necessary to protect the city of Portland and to defend institutions of the immigration authority ICE against Antifa supporters and “other domestic terrorists”.
Trump had already sent soldiers to Los Angeles months ago with the aim of suppressing protests against ICE raids. Weeks ago, the US President also prompted the national guard in the US capital Washington-but there in order to contain the crime from his point of view. Critics accuse him of a show and fear that the mood in the cities could continue to heat up with a view to the ongoing ICE raids.
Trump also announced a deployment of soldiers in the city of Memphis, which was also re-established in the US state of Tennessee. Again and again he threatened to use the national guard in Chicago. So far, Trump has always intervened in places that are ruled by Democrats.
