CDU politician: Less climate protection instead of empty factory halls

Tilman Kuban (CDU) demands that the previous German climate goals be given up. The previous plan endanger jobs. He was not alone with this view.

The Union faction in the Bundestag comes to reduce Germany’s climate goals. “It is sufficient if we are 80 percent climate -neutral in 2045 and have received prosperity and democracy – this is still very ambitious in a global comparison,” said the Union faction, Tilman Kuban (CDU), the newspaper “Welt”. Only then “should we again discuss how we deal with the remaining 20 percent”.

Prerequisite of the constitutional court

In 2021, the Federal Constitutional Court decided that politicians had to improve climate protection in order to protect future generations. As a result, the then black and red coalition, led by Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), tightened the climate goals.

In the Climate Protection Act, it is now stipulated that Germany should reduce its emissions of greenhouse gases by 65 percent by 2030 compared to 1990. By 2045, Germany wants to be climate -neutral, i.e. no more greenhouse gases than can be saved again.

Cuban: EU climate) also wobbles

Kuban said: “The key question is whether the world really goes down just because a few coal ovens are still running in Germany to produce steel, or because there is still a few combustion engines on the street and possibly not every house is completely insulated.”

It is important to face reality in Europe: “What I hear from my colleagues from France, Poland, Italy or Eastern European countries is very clear: the EU climate center 2050 is also under violent pressure.” Germany should not isolate itself on this question. “80 percent climate protection with prosperity and democracy are better than 100 percent with empty factory halls,” said Kuban.
