In the nuclear dispute with Iran, the signs are confronted. Do you need sanctions to get Tehran to concessions?
After the failed rescue attempts for the nuclear agreement with Iran, the EU will again put out sanctions. The punitive measures include measures that prevent the access of Iranian freight aircraft to EU airports, as well as the ban on maintaining and repairing Iranian cargo aircraft or ships that transport certain materials or goods, as the Member States’ Council announced according to a corresponding decision.
In addition, the import, acquisition and transport of crude oil, oil products and natural gas are prohibited as well as trading in certain software products, energy technology, ship equipment, precious metals and diamonds.
Entry bans and asset barriers are reintroduced against persons who are connected to the Iranian nuclear program. The same applies to companies and organizations.
EU implements agreements from New York
With the reintroduction of the sanctions, the EU reacts to the expiry of the deadline triggered by Germany, Great Britain and France to save the international nuclear deal with Iran. As a result, UN sanctions had come back into force at the weekend, which are also binding for the EU.
The nuclear agreement from 2015 had actually planned restrictions on the Iranian nuclear program in order to rule out the construction of an atomic bomb. In return, sanctions were negotiated. Because Iran has not adhered to its obligations, punitive measures are now being put into force internationally.
They complement the sanctions that the EU imposed on human rights and the military support of the War of the War of Russia against Ukraine or had not lifted in the course of the nuclear residues. They also include a weapon embargo.
