Originally, the Russian military was only supposed to be in Belarus as part of a military exercise. Now the stationing could become permanent – and also include nuclear weapons.
French President Emmanuel Macron has warned Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko against allowing Russia to station nuclear weapons on Belarusian soil.
In a phone call between the two statesmen, Macron called on Lukashenko to arrange for Russian troops to withdraw from his soil as soon as possible.
State media in Minsk had previously reported the phone call without providing any details. As the Elysée said, Macron asked the Belarusian ruler to cooperate with the international community in conducting humanitarian aid operations for Ukraine.
A referendum will be held in Belarus this Sunday on a constitutional amendment that would allow Lukashenko further terms in office and the future permanent stationing of Russian troops and nuclear weapons in the country.
