Moldova on EU course: Government party gets a majority again

President Sandu wants to continue the EU course with a majority pro-European forces after the parliamentary election in Moldova. The Russian -friendly opposition failed in the vote.

After its victory in the parliamentary election in the Republic of Moldova, the pro-European government party campaign and solidarity (PAS) around President Maia Sandu wants to continue the course towards the EU accession. “I am glad that our way to the EU is guaranteed,” said Sandu after the results announced. The Russia -friendly patriotic block of former President Igor Dodon ended up in second place.

Observers of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) praised the organization of the coordination as smoothly in a “difficult environment”. Critical spokesman Dmitri Peskow complained from Moscow that Moldova only opened two polling stations for the hundreds of thousands of citizens living in Russia.

Traditionally, Moldau with its 2.4 million inhabitants is torn between an approximation to the EU and a reference to Russia. The two neighbors – EU member Romania and Ukraine – congratulated PAS on victory. They welcomed the defeat of Russia -friendly forces.

The President President Sandu once more owes her victory to the Molders in the EU, who traditionally support the Prewestish course. Sandu had previously accused Russia of massive influence, including buying voices, disinformation and cyber attacks.

Observers call for equal access to the election

The OSCE observer and German MP Michael Gahler (CDU) said that Russia exerted unprecedented pressure before the election on Sunday, but failed. The election observers also noted that Moldau still had to improve his processes. The Maltese observer Chris Said said with a view to the restrictions for the renegade region of Transnistria that Moldau must in future guarantee all voters – whether in the country itself or abroad. He did not go into the allegations from Russia.

The Moldovian Ministry of Foreign Affairs had declared on election day that only 5,000 ballot papers were available in the two polling stations in Russia. The ministry called security reasons for this, but did not specify them. Hundreds of thousands of Moldova live in Russia.

The decision to restrict two parties a few days before the election caused allegations of political bias, the press conference of the OSCE election observer in Chisinau said. The Heart Moldaus party, which had belonged to the Russian -friendly election alliance of Patriotic Block, was also affected. She was accused of financial violations.

Sandu loses the constitutional majority

Sandus Government Party lost its constitutional majority in parliament with 101 seats, but won 50.20 percent and will continue to hold more than 50 mandates. The PAS surprisingly prevailed against the Russian -friendly patriotic block of Dodon, which came to only 24.17 percent of the vote.

Expert Brigitta Triebel from the CDU-close Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Chisinau to the German Press Agency said that the PAS could reign alone again. The party’s strategy of relying on the polarization of the country in the election campaign and at the same time showing the ability of the state organs’ ability to act obviously. It was possible to mobilize people despite the dissatisfaction with the economic situation for the election.

The parliamentary election in the impoverished agricultural state between EU member Romania and Ukraine was considered directional. The turnout was 52.21 percent. Moldau has been a candidate for the EU since 2022.

Only a few when protest against election outcome in Moldau

Loss losers and ex-President Dodon was able to collect only a few dissatisfied on the street in a protest in Chisinau on Monday. He complained that many people in the renegade region of Transnistria, in which Russian soldiers are stationed, were prevented from voting.

The Russian -friendly forces of the Block Alternativa (7.96 percent) and the Nostru party of the businessman Renato Usatii (6.20 percent) also succeeded. Surprisingly, according to the temporary official end result, the PPDA party, which was once founded for a union with Romania, also made the jump over the 5 percent hurdle (5.62 percent).

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote in alluding to Russian attempts to influence, no attempt to sow fear and division, had been able to break the will of the state. The door of the European Union is open and Moldau will be supported there on every step of the way.

Foreign Minister Johann WadePhul also assured the country on the way to the EU. “Yesterday, people in Moldau chose freedom and democracy, for the rule of law and the prospect of a good future for their country,” said the CDU politician at a meeting with his counterparts from Poland, France and Ukraine in Warsaw.
