The United States threatens to paralyze a shutdown. Be careful what you send at WhatsApp. And: as in companies overtime. The situation in the morning.
Good morning, dear readers,
When I entered the United States last week, I got a conversation with a border official who was interested in my work in the USA. Contrary to my expectations, what initially looked like an interrogation developed into a nice conversation. “You can’t believe what is happening in this country. They are crazy times,” his farewell words were in me.
Now the country is facing days of chaos again, because from Wednesday at midnight there is a risk of another shutdown. If the debt border is not raised from the US Senate on Tuesday, part of public life will stand still in the country from Wednesday. US President Donald Trump and the budget authority decide which employees are sent on a forced vacation. National parks, state museums or educational institutions could be completely closed.
Republicans and Democrats have been negotiating a possible agreement for days, but they have been torpedoed in advance by statements by the US President. If there is a shutdown, he is forced to “release many people permanently”. Normally, government employees are only permitted during the budget lock. A meeting of Trump with the leading Democrats Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries ended without unsuccessful on Tuesday night.
Both sides are far from an agreement. The Democrats want Contributions, among other things, for the health protection of poorer sections of the population, also known as Obamacare. Without this, the contributions for millions of people would rise rapidly and many Americans might bring their health insurance. The Republicans and Donald Trump Run this, instead request a transitional budget until mid -November.
The dangerous game of the US Democrats
But the demands of the Democrats are only part of what these days are. Since the republican The majority in the Senate and House of Representatives have the influence of the Democrats into everyday political life. However, 60 votes in the Senate are needed to raise the debt limit, but the Republicans only have 53 and are therefore dependent on the democrats that have a leverage.
The game of the Democrats is simple but risky. They hope to represent Donald Trump as a scapegoat with a shutdown and bring the voters back to their side. The left -wing stem electorate in particular turned away in March after the Democrats carried a draft budget peppered with cuts and did not agree against it as announced. While in the past the side that made the demands was always punished by the voters, this is at least uncertain this time. In mid -June, a survey showed that 77 percent of the Americans would welcome a continuation of Obamacare. The demands of the Democrats are therefore based on broad support.
It is unlikely that both sides will still agree. The last time there was a standstill in the USA at the end of 2018. The 34 days were the longest shutdown in US history. Back then: Donald Trump.
Eyes what you send at WhatsApp
More and more companies are focusing on contacting their customers at the popular Messenger WhatsApp. But what sounds easy also has a dark side. Again and again there are fraud cases. They pretend to be a law firm, banks or platforms for cryptocurrencies – and sometimes even report with a classic letter to the victims. The deceptively real -looking letters should arouse confidence in the addressees – then to steal their identity.
A letter from a “law firm”, false job offers or financial transactions, the fraudsters are quite versatile with their mesh. But everyone has one thing, they need important information from their victims. What you should pay attention to if you receive mail or a message from an unknown sender, my colleague Malte Malte wrote to you.
As is tricked in companies during working hours
The recording of working hours has been mandatory since 2022. This is determined by the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Employees are allowed to pursue their service eight hours a day, only more is allowed in exceptional cases. However, employees and employers often avoid recording with simple tricks. Sometimes a detection tool reminds the workers that they should be stamped out despite still ongoing work, sometimes employers actively ask for the employees to gloss over their working hours.
The representation in the time recording tool is not always realistic. “I know cases from the hospital where employees in the operating room are on their feet twelve hours at a time,” says lawyer Susan Wittig. “You have to think about what the consequence of it. This can lead to serious mistakes. If you continue to check this, the employer will be extremely irresponsible and even makes himself punishable.”
My colleague Nina Ponath tells you which rules apply to employees and employers.
