Putin currently seems to be able to provoke the EU at will. The Europeans are now looking for a summit of strengthening the deterrent. They have a fist pan.
Under the impression of the latest airspace injuries by Russian fighter jets and Kamikaze drones, the heads of state and government of the EU countries in Copenhagen today advise on joint efforts for better deterrent and defense. The top meeting in the Danish capital is primarily concerned with the question of which military skills can be built up or strengthened through EU projects.
There are already plans for a so -called drone wall, which is intended to enable, follow and intercept unmanned air bodies with the latest technology. It should be built up as quickly as possible on the eastern flank of the EU.
Another big topic at the first major EU top meeting in the second half of the year is the further support for Ukraine. In this context, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have proposed to use frozen Russian central bank funds in order to provide additional loans to Ukraine. There is an amount of around 140 billion euros.
Summit with Ukraine on Thursday
In addition, EU countries such as Spain and Ireland are expected to appeal to the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and to reach an agreement on sanctions against Israel. As with the other topics, however, no decisions were foreseeable until the end. There should be concrete progress at the next formal EU summit at the earliest, which is to take place in Brussels in the penultimate October week.
The seventh summit of the European Political Community (EPG) also joins the EU consultations on Thursday in Copenhagen. He should also be concerned with the support of Ukraine, but also about economic security and migration issues.
The EPG summit is a conversation format that was launched by French President Emmanuel Macron. This time, heads of state and government from 47 countries are invited. In addition to the 27 EU countries, this also includes countries such as Great Britain, Moldova, Ukraine, Switzerland and Georgia.
German frigate supports security concept
It is eagerly awaited whether Denmark succeeds in preventing major accidents at the top meetings. There have been drone alarm in the country since the beginning of last week. So far, it is unclear who is behind the incidents. Russia rejects the suspicion of a involvement as “bottomless”.
So far, the Danish authorities have not assigned any debt allegations, but assume a professional actor who wants to create unrest in NATO country with the procedure. In the room it is assumed that at least some drones could have been controlled from a ship. Because of the drone sightings in Copenhagen, the airport had to be closed at times for security reasons – thousands of travelers were affected by flight cancellations and delays. For example, military facilities were also affected.
Also involved in the protection of partner states
Armed Forces from partner states are now also participating in the protection of the summit meetings. Among other things, the Bundeswehr has sent the “Hamburg” frigate to Copenhagen, which is specially equipped for air defense and is able to record more than 1,000 goals with its radar at the same time. Ideally, however, it remains calm for the crew. Meanwhile, there is a ban on drone through Denmark – only the police drones can be in the air.
The scenario is considered a super gau for the EU and summit host Denmark that, due to the viewing of unmanned aircraft, aircraft from heads of state and government cannot end up in Copenhagen and that the course of the top meeting is therefore disrupted.
