The United States is in the shutdown, the work of some government agencies is quiet. A first attempt to end the budget lock in the Senate failed.
In the United States, the Federal Administration’s standstill remains. In the Senate in Washington, an application by the ruling Republicans fell on Wednesday for a transitional budget. It was the first vote since the so -called shutdown came into force on Wednesday night.
In order to end the budget lock, the Republicans need at least 60 of the 100 votes in the Senate, the upper congress chamber. President Donald Trump’s party himself has only 53 seats and is therefore dependent on voices from the opposition Democrats. The House of Representatives had already approved the transitional budget.
The Trump government again blamed the opposition to the situation. It was the “shutdown of the Democrats”, it was said in online publications in the White House. In turn, the Democrats demand funds for health care and accuse Trump of letting low-income US citizens down.
First shutdown since Trump’s first term in office
With the shutdown, an estimated around 750,000 federal officials are sent on the forced vacation. Areas of basic supply such as air traffic control, police or emergency care in hospitals are excluded. How long the budget lock will last is currently unclear.
It is the first shutdown since the year 2018/2019, while Trump’s first term. At that time, the budget lock lasted 35 days, it was the longest in US history so far. The background was a dispute over the financing of the border wall announced by Trump in Mexico.
