Ceasefire negotiations between Hamas and Israel are underway in Cairo. The Palestinian organization is now demanding guarantees from Trump that the war will end.
During indirect negotiations with Israel in Egypt, Hamas’ chief negotiator, Chalil al-Hajja, demanded “guarantees” from US President Donald Trump and the mediators for an end to the war in the Gaza Strip. “We don’t trust the occupying power, not even for a second,” he told the Al-Kahera News TV channel group, which is close to the Egyptian secret service, on Tuesday, referring to Israel.
“The Israeli occupying power has never kept its promises throughout history,” said al-Hajja. Israel has broken two ceasefires in the current war. “That’s why we want real guarantees,” explained the negotiator. Hamas is ready to work toward an agreement that includes an end to the war, the withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Gaza Strip and an exchange of hostages and Palestinian prisoners, he added.
Hamas should demand the release of Marwan Barghouti
According to Al-Kahera News, Hamas demanded, among other things, the release of Palestinian politician Marwan Barghouti during the talks. Barghouti has been serving a life sentence since 2002. He was one of the leaders of the Second Intifada, the Palestinian uprising in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories from 2000 to 2005, and is considered one of the most popular politicians in the Palestinian Fatah party.
Israel and Hamas have been holding indirect talks since Monday, mediated by Egypt, Qatar and the USA, about a Gaza plan presented by Trump. Trump’s proposal includes, among other things, the release of all hostages held by Hamas, the disarmament of Hamas and a gradual withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Gaza Strip.
Hamas should no longer play a role
According to the plan, Hamas will no longer play any role in the administration of the Gaza Strip. However, the Islamist Palestinian organization insists on having a say and has not yet responded to the demand for its complete disarmament.
