The Nobel Peace Prize must definitely go to US President Donald Trump – at least that’s what he thinks. But the committee has long since made its decision for 2025.
US President Donald Trump is claiming the Nobel Peace Prize and is likely to see this confirmed by the agreement on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip – but the responsible Nobel Committee concluded its deliberations days ago. “The last meeting of the Nobel Committee took place on Monday,” its spokesman Erik Aasheim told the AFP news agency on Thursday. The new Nobel Peace Prize winner is to be announced on Friday.
The five-member Nobel Committee usually makes its decision several days or even weeks before the official announcement and meets one last time shortly before the new laureate is chosen. “The final steps were taken on Monday, but we will never announce when the Nobel Committee will make its decision,” said Aasheim. No further meeting of the committee is planned until the award winner is announced.
It is clear that there will be a prize winner this year too, he emphasized. Some experts had speculated that the Nobel Committee might forgo awarding the Nobel Peace Prize due to the worsening geopolitical situation.
Donald Trump demands Nobel Peace Prize
Trump has repeatedly claimed the award. The 79-year-old boasts of having ended several wars since being sworn in in January. At the end of September he said it would be an “insult” to the US if he did not receive the prize.
Nobel Peace Prize for Trump? Some of these winners were even worse
1906: Theodore Roosevelt
Roosevelt – 26th President of the United States – received the award as a mediator in the Russo-Japanese War. He was known for his imperialist, military-oriented US foreign policy and support for the construction of the Panama Canal through war and intervention – and for his passion for big game hunting. However, historian Asle Sveen assumes that the US president will come away empty-handed. The agreement announced on Thursday night between Israel and the radical Islamic Hamas, which is based on Trump’s Gaza plan, had “absolutely no influence” on the choice of the prize winner, as the Nobel Committee had already made its decision beforehand.
Experts are sure that Trump will come away empty-handed
“Trump will not win the prize this year. I am 100 percent sure of that,” emphasized the Nobel Prize expert. He also pointed out that the US President had long given Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “free hand” in the bombing of the Gaza Strip and that Israel had provided extensive military aid.
This year, 338 people and organizations were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Last year the prize was awarded to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo, which advocates for a world without nuclear weapons.
