Lindsey Halligan denounces who Donald Trump wants. That changes with basic security. And: Can matcha tea cause iron deficiency? The situation in the morning.
Good morning, dear readers,
Donald Trump had the best reasons to be in a good mood on Thursday. At a press conference he gave details of the first phase of the Gaza deal. “That’s e“Something that people said would never happen,” the US President praised himself. On Thursday evening (local time) he received a gift from his Ministry of Justice, which announced the lawsuit against Letitia James. The accusation: Bank fraud and false information to a credit institution.
It was the New York Attorney General who made one last year civil fraud proceedings against Trump and his real estate company has filed. Trump was fined over $454 million in May 2024. A Court of Appeals But described the fine as “excessive” and overturned the verdict in August. James announced that he would appeal.
It is another indication of how the US President is abusing his power and the Justice Department is following Trump’s will. In mid-September, Trump publicly called on the Justice Department to take action against his opponents. The focus is on one woman in particular: Lindsey Halligan. The 36-year-old lawyer was formerly Trump’s lawyer and worked in the White House until the end of September. Until Trump himself appointed her prosecutor for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Thin evidence? Trump and Halligan don’t care
Her predecessor resigned from office at the end of September under pressure from the White House because, according to media reports, he did not find enough evidence to indict James and the ex-FBI-Boss James Comey saw. Just five days after her appointment, Halligan filed an indictment against Comey, followed less than two weeks later by another against James.
Trump had previously lobbied Attorney General Pam Bondi to install Halligan in office. “She is an intelligent and very loyal lawyer,” Trump posted on his own social media site Truth Social. It is at least doubtful whether Halligan is even suitable as a prosecutor. This is what the “New York Times” recently said that the lawyer lacked any experience in law enforcement or in overseeing complex national security cases. In her ten-year career, she had only represented a few cases at the federal level – and only as Donald Trump’s personal lawyer. Otherwise, she had only represented insurance cases in Florida, the “New York Times” reported after an evaluation of her cases.
The US President, however, doesn’t care at all about Halligan’s qualifications – Trump is only interested in revenge and the Justice Department is his most important tool. And in Halligan he has found a lawyer who is not loyal to the United States, but to its president.
What the lawsuits against Comey and James have in common: They stand on very thin ice. The Washington Post reported on Thursday (local time) that Halligan himself presented the charges against James to a jury. Accordingly, Halligan’s office could not find a lawyer who was willing to take on this assignment. The newspaper relies on anonymous sources from the Ministry of Justice. Initial reactions from legal experts estimated that the lawsuit’s chances of success were low. The Comey case is similar. At the first court hearing, a North Carolina attorney sat next to Halligan. Her Virginia district attorneys had refused to argue the case because it was too weak, the New York Times reported.
But the impact of Halligan’s appointment is becoming increasingly clear. Trump wants to prosecute his political enemies in the country – as shaky as the case is. The US President makes no secret of who might be next. At the end of September, Trump called for Adam Schiff to be impeached. It would be a further escalation in Trump’s agenda: Schiff sits for the Democrats in the US Senate.
What will change with basic security?
Tougher sanctions, faster job placement, a new name: After months of negotiations, the leaders of the black-red coalition have agreed on the key points for a reform of citizens’ money. In the future there should be basic security.
But what actually changes? Does this really save billions? And doesn’t the fate of the coalition depend on a completely different issue? They are discussing this star– Political leaders Veit Medick and Jan Rosenkranz in a five-minute talk.
Can matcha tea really cause iron deficiency?
Disturbing images and videos are making the rounds on social networks such as Tiktok and Instagram: women are allegedly in the hospital with an infusion. People who introduce themselves as alternative practitioners or emergency paramedics warn of dangerous deficiency symptoms, allegedly caused by a popular drink: matcha green tea, also often drunk as a matcha latte.
It is chemically correct that certain ingredients in green matcha inhibit iron absorption. But can they really cause a “dangerous” iron deficiency?
