According to a media report, the federal government is planning to invest billions in drone defense: more than 600 Skyranger anti-aircraft tanks are to be delivered by 2030.
According to a media report, the Bundeswehr is planning to massively strengthen its drone defense.
As the “Handelsblatt” learned from circles in the Federal Ministry of Defense and from people in the industrial environment familiar with the processes, the federal government wants to order more than 600 Skyranger 30 anti-aircraft tanks from the Düsseldorf-based arms company Rheinmetall this year.
The order value of the wheeled armored vehicles manufactured in this case together with the French-German arms company KNDS is estimated at more than nine billion euros, as the “Handelsblatt” reported on Friday. The tanks are scheduled to be delivered by 2030.
Skyranger is the successor to the Gepard tank
As the Reuters news agency reported last week, Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius had already announced the procurement of several hundred Skyranger anti-aircraft tanks in the coming months. So far only 19 of these tanks have been ordered.
Rheinmetall’s Skyranger is a cannon-based system specifically designed to defend against low-flying objects. The system is the successor to the Gepard anti-aircraft tank, which was retired from the Bundeswehr in 2010 and which has proven to be an effective means of defending against Russian Geran drones in Ukraine.
