US President Trump is on his way to the Middle East. Before his departure, he was optimistic about the Gaza peace agreement.
According to US President Donald Trump, the war in the Gaza Strip is over, regardless of the outstanding peace negotiations. “The war is over,” the Republican told reporters on Air Force One on the way to the Middle East. He assumes that the ceasefire will hold.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, had previously said that the fight was not over yet. “There are still major security challenges ahead.” Some enemies were trying to recover to attack again, the Israeli leader said.
Donald Trump is on his way to Israel
Trump is traveling to Israel to meet hostage families this morning (local time) and then give a speech to the Knesset – the Israeli parliament. In the afternoon, Trump wants to travel to the Egyptian coastal town of Sharm el-Sheikh for a “Middle East peace ceremony” to mark the agreement he brokered between Israel and the Islamist Hamas. According to the White House plan, the President will be back in Washington on Tuesday night (local time).
A few days ago, the warring parties agreed in indirect negotiations on a ceasefire, the release of hostages and prisoners and a partial withdrawal of Israel’s troops in Gaza. Despite these positive steps, it is far from certain whether the war will end permanently.
