Cheers to brutality: Lars Klingbeil, Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister, finds kind words for the US President and his Gaza peace plan from Caren Miosga.
“Maybe it’s exactly this brutality, but you have to say: Without Donald Trump this wouldn’t have happened.” Vice Chancellor and SPD chairman Lars Klingbeil chose rare words about the role of the US president in the Middle East war. In the ARD talk “Caren Miosga” he praised Trump: The status of the peace negotiations is “his achievement. I want to state that clearly.”
The USA has a very large influence in the region. “You can influence which direction it goes. And that has Donald Trump “We worked for and worked towards it – towards Netanyahu, towards the Palestinians, towards the Arab countries too,” Klingbeil continued.
Lars Klingbeil announces support for Gaza
Donald Trump is expected in the Middle East on Monday morning. First in Israel, then in Egyptwhere there will be an international summit to implement his peace plan. Numerous heads of state and government will take part in the meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh, including Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU).
Klingbeil also emphasizes preparedness Germanyto take a leading role in reconstruction: “The main thing is that we now also take political leadership with the reconstruction conference that we are organizing together with Egypt. It’s about the technical know-how that we have. But of course in the end it will also be about the financial questions. But that all has to be clarified now.”
National themes in “Carmen Miosga”
He is pushing for the funds from the billion-dollar investment program to be used quickly to modernize the infrastructure. “We also need a different pace in Germany,” the goal must be that something noticeably changes.
The black-red federal government has set up a so-called special fund for infrastructure and climate protection worth 500 billion euros. 100 billion euros go to the states. “We are investing in the infrastructure of this country. That is necessary. Because we now have an infrastructure that is embarrassing,” said Klingbeil.
Klingbeil made the federal states obligated to also allow funds to benefit the municipalities. He would have liked 60 percent of the state share to go to the cities and municipalities; that was also in the first draft law. However, the states unanimously voted against it. Klingbeil promised that the federal government would control the use of the funds and use its share to do a lot for the municipalities.
Despite investing billions, Germany has to save money
And while he was talking about money, the Federal Finance Minister is calling for billions in savings for the difficult 2027 budget. The aim is to have a package ready “around the turn of the year” and “we have already started this process”.
There must then soon be a moment when the chairmen of the CDU, CSU and SPD announce for the coalition: “This is a complete package, and with this we will save 34 billion,” said Klingbeil, with a view to the expected budget hole in 2027. He considers this approach to be better “than someone chasing a new pig through the village every day.”
Specifically It should be clarified what a fair package could look like. “We will have to do something about the welfare state, about care, about pensions and about health.” But it will only work if you have the courage “to approach those who have a lot of money in this country“.
