Hamas handed over 20 living hostages to Israel. Of many more, only the remains remain. In four cases it is now clear who the victims were.
The first four dead hostages handed over to Israel by the Islamist Hamas have been identified, according to Israeli sources. The identities of 26-year-old Israeli citizen Guy Illouz, 22-year-old Nepalese student Bipin Joshi and the two other hostages have been proven, the Israeli army said on Tuesday. At the request of the relatives of two hostages, their identities will not be revealed.
The coffins containing the remains were handed over to Israel on Monday and taken to the National Institute of Forensic Medicine in Tel Aviv for identification.
One dead Hamas hostage was a student
The handover of the bodies is part of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas last Friday. In total, the bodies of 27 hostages kidnapped during the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, as well as the body of an Israeli soldier killed in 2014, are to be handed over to Israel. There are probably three of the deceased who also had German citizenship.
On Monday, the last 20 surviving hostages were handed over by Hamas to the Red Cross and taken to Israel. A little later, Israel released almost 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.
Guy Illouz was kidnapped and taken to the Gaza Strip during the Hamas attack on the Supernova music festival on October 7, 2023. Bipin Joshi was kidnapped and held in the Gaza Strip as part of the major Hamas attack on Kibbutz Alumim. The agriculture student was one of a group of Nepalese students who had come to Israel just three weeks earlier to tend orange and lemon plantations.
