The Trump administration has been cracking down on migrants for months. In Los Angeles there is now a plan to help people.
Los Angeles County is responding to ICE raids with an emergency declaration to provide migrants with more help and protection. The majority of the district board voted in favor of the emergency declaration on Tuesday (local time). This measure is intended to enable assistance for tenant protection and other needs of those affected.
Migrants in Los Angeles under pressure
Lindsey Horvath, a member of the district council and supervisor, submitted the statement. That way, the district can support families that have been destabilized because of ICE raids and the Trump administration’s deportation policies, she said.
“For months, families have been living under threat and workers have been taken away from their jobs,” Horvath wrote in a statement. Fewer migrants would go to work out of fear of the actions of US President Donald Trump’s government. Thanks to the emergency declaration, the district can now intervene faster and better to support migrants and communities in economic distress.
According to the county executive, more than three million immigrants live in Los Angeles County, with a total population of over ten million. In the greater Los Angeles area, Trump’s harsh migration policy and the authorities’ actions sparked weeks of protests in June. Trump sent soldiers to Southern California with the stated goal of pushing back protests against ICE raids.
