War on Ukraine: No breakthrough in peace talks

The Ukrainian President is once again addressing his people and the world public via social media. Peace negotiations have so far been unsuccessful.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for Russia’s expulsion from the UN Security Council.

“A state that commits war crimes against civilians cannot be a member of the UN Security Council,” he said in a video message that he shared on his Facebook page and Telegram channel late Monday evening.

«Here is Ukraine. Here is Europe. Here is the year 2022. The evil armed with rockets, bombs and artillery must be stopped immediately. Economically destroyed. To show that humanity can defend itself,” Zelenskyy said. A complete blocking of the airspace for Russian missiles, planes and helicopters must be considered.

Zelenskyy further demanded that Russia should be denied access to all ports, canals and airports in the world. According to Zelenskyy, which could not be independently verified, Russia has carried out 56 rocket attacks on Ukraine since the invasion began five days ago. 113 cruise missiles were fired.

“That’s how it is, the ‘brotherly friendship’,” said Zelenskyj. «Such a state should not receive hundreds of billions for the export of energy resources. Whoever buys Russian goods now pays money to kill people, »Zelenskyj continued.

No breakthrough in negotiations

Meanwhile, the peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, opened by Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makey, ended without a breakthrough – the meeting on the Belarusian-Ukrainian border lasted about six hours.

Ukraine has not yet achieved the desired result, Zelenskyy said in the video message. “Russia has presented its positions, counter-arguments have been made by us to end the war.” As soon as the delegation is back in Kyiv, they will analyze and decide how to proceed in the second round of negotiations.

The talks had started on Monday afternoon with a significant delay. The Russian delegation was led by the Kremlin’s special envoy, Vladimir Medinsky. Presidential faction leader David Arakhamiya led the Ukrainian side. The exact location of the negotiations was not initially known.

The delegation from Moscow also included: Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko, Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin, the Russian envoy at the negotiations of the so-called Contact Group, Boris Gryzlov, and the well-known foreign politician Leonid Slutsky.

In addition to Arakhamiya, Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov, Presidential Advisor Mykhailo Podoliak, the deputy head of the Ukrainian delegation in the trilateral contact group (Minskkram), Andriy Kostin, MP Rustem Umerov and Deputy Foreign Minister Mykola Tochytskyi traveled to the Ukrainian delegation.
