War in Ukraine: Macron to Putin: end attacks on civilians

Russia is accused of attacks on civilians. Emmanuel Macron and UN Secretary-General António Guterres have strongly condemned this warfare. The Russian ambassador to the UN speaks of lies.

French President Emmanuel Macron has called on his Russian colleague Vladimir Putin during the peace talks with Ukraine to end offensives against civilians in particular.

All attacks on private individuals and places of residence should be stopped, the civil infrastructure should be preserved, Macron demanded in the phone call, according to the Élyséepalast. Roads should also be secured, especially in the south of Kiev. It was said from Paris that Putin had shown himself willing to work on the points.

At least 352 civilians, including 14 children, have been killed nationwide since Russia’s war against Ukraine began, according to the Health Ministry. There are also at least 1,700 wounded civilians, including 116 children. The figures were published on Sunday.

Macron also renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire and an end to Russian attacks on Ukraine. He also stressed that international human rights must be respected.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned Russia’s war in Ukraine. “Although Russian attacks have been reported to largely target Ukrainian military installations, we have credible reports of residential buildings, critical civilian infrastructure and other non-military targets suffering severe damage,” Guterres said at an emergency session of the UN General Assembly in New York. “This escalating violence resulting in the deaths of civilians, including children, is totally unacceptable. Enough is enough.”

At the emergency session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Russia also commented on this. “We constantly hear lies about the indiscriminate shelling of Ukrainian cities, hospitals, schools, kindergartens,” said Russian Ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebensia. “We do not shoot at civilian areas and districts.”
