Driving license for more than 4000 euros? Even Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder thinks that’s too much. But how is the rag supposed to be affordable? A few ideas.
Driving licenses should become cheaper in Germany. Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) wants to present the key points of a reform of driving school training this Thursday, with the aim of reducing the costs of driving licenses. The aim is to make obtaining a driving license more affordable while maintaining high safety standards, according to government circles. According to information from the industry, a driving license currently costs around 3,000 euros on average, but under certain circumstances it can also cost up to 4,500 euros.
Schnieder had already explained in the summer that a driving license that costs 4,000 euros or more was too expensive. At that time, he announced that he would examine measures that could have a cost-cutting effect – such as more transparency at driving schools. At the same time, the CDU politician emphasized that the federal government did not want to set any requirements for driving school prices.
Why driving licenses are so expensive
Support for a reform comes from the Federal Association of Driving Instructors Associations, which is in favor of more compact training. “I am firmly convinced that driving lessons can be saved with more compact training,” said vice-chairman Kurt Bartels of the “Rheinische Post” (Thursday). Mandatory learning goal controls and more school-based training are conceivable so that learner drivers “stay on the ball more”. The increasing number of driving lessons is the biggest cost driver, according to Bartels.
What applies here: Do you still know these traffic rules?
At the yellow stop sign (sign 224), parking is prohibited up to 15 meters in front of and behind the sign – including on the shoulder. This protects passengers and ensures buses have the necessary maneuvering space. Short-term holding is permitted; The difference between stopping and parking is clearly regulated in Section 12 Paragraph 2 StVO: Anyone who leaves their vehicle or stops for more than three minutes is parking. Short stops to get on and off are permitted as long as buses are not obstructed

At the same time, Bartels spoke out in favor of streamlining the theoretical exam. “We are now at over 1,200 questions for a Class B driving license, that’s just too much,” he said. A simplified theory could increase the motivation of the examinees without endangering road safety.
The Union and SPD had announced a reform for affordable driving licenses in the coalition agreement. The key points now planned are intended to be the start of concrete new regulations.
