Journalists leave the US Department of Defense in protest
US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth wants to limit reporting on his ministry through a catalog of rules. The press is stunned. Even Fox News is drawing conclusions.
In protest against new rules, the US Department of Defense press corps has almost entirely left the Pentagon. The US media unanimously report that the background is the introduction of a 21-page catalog of rules. Only journalists from the pro-government channel One America News were willing to accept the new rules and continue to have access to jobs in the ministry, US media report.
The Republican-affiliated channel Fox News, for which Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth previously worked, has also refused to sign the new rules. In particular, the policy has drawn widespread criticism, saying reporters can have their accreditation revoked if they publish information without Pentagon approval, even if it is not classified.
Pentagon rules anger US journalists
Members of the Pentagon press corps would have had to sign their commitment to compliance by Tuesday at 5 p.m. local time (11 p.m. German time). After the deadline had passed, the reporters had to hand in their accreditation card and vacate their place within 24 hours.
The major news networks CBS News, ABC News, CNN and NBC News have also refused to accept the requirements of the Department of Defense – which the US government has recently called the “Department of War”. The Pentagon’s new requirements “limit journalists’ ability to keep the nation and the world informed on important national security issues,” the networks criticized in a joint statement with Fox News on Tuesday.
