Jessica Rosenthal: Juso boss warns of “black hole” in rearmament

In view of the Russian attack on Ukraine, Germany wants to massively upgrade the Bundeswehr. But even in the governing party SPD there are doubts about the project.

Because of the planned billions in investments in the Bundeswehr, there is resistance within the SPD.

Juso Chairwoman Jessica Rosenthal does not want to support Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s (SPD) plans to equip the Bundeswehr with a special fund of 100 billion euros. “I agree that we need a strong Bundeswehr. But I don’t see that more money alone solves the problem at this point,” Rosenthal told the Süddeutsche Zeitung (Tuesday). “It’s no use sinking billions more into a black hole.” She believes that funds for the Bundeswehr have so far been used ineffectively.

In view of the Russian attack on Ukraine, Germany wants to massively upgrade the Bundeswehr. Scholz had announced that the 100 billion euros would be provided with the 2022 federal budget. In addition, Germany should invest more than two percent of the gross domestic product in defense every year in the future. Scholz called on all parliamentary groups in the Bundestag to secure the special fund in the Basic Law. Rosenthal announced that he intends to vote against the government plans. In her view, the Basic Law is not the place where military spending should be fixed for all time.
