US President Donald Trump is sending his National Guard to combat crime in the USA. A troop is now running through Memphis. What is all this for?

On the orders of US President Donald Trump, National Guard forces have been sent to the Democratic-governed city of Memphis. Authorities in the state of Tennessee said on Thursday that they were involved in “security patrols, securing locations and traffic controls”. The troops are “under the orders of the President” and their deployment has been approved by Governor Bill Lee.

Memphis is governed by a Democratic mayor, Paul Young. Lee, on the other hand, is a member of Trump’s Republicans.

Court: National Guard is not allowed to deploy in Chicago

Trump had also threatened similar National Guard deployments to Democratic strongholds such as Chicago, New York and New Orleans. The Democratic governor of the state of Illinois, JB Pritzker, strongly protested against Trump’s plans to send troops to Chicago. The ICE immigration police have been deployed in Chicago since September to push ahead with the mass deportations announced by Trump.

Simply explained

What is the US National Guard? And what is their job?

However, the suspension of the deployment of the National Guard in Chicago ordered by the US President was confirmed by an appeals court. The US government did not provide sufficient evidence to show that the situation in Chicago justified the deployment of troops, the court ruled on Thursday.

Trump has already sent the National Guard to the cities of Los Angeles and Washington, which are also governed by Democrats. The US President justifies the controversial approach with protests against immigration police and allegedly escalating crime.
