There is a threat of emergency in parts of Peru – curfew in Lima

For months, young people in Peru took to the streets against their government. Now the president is gone. However, her departure does not calm the situation in the country.

Peru’s new government wants to declare a state of emergency for the capital region of the South American country. The measures announced for the coming days, including a curfew in Lima, are currently being prepared by the government on behalf of the President, said the Chairman of the Council of Ministers, Ernesto Álvarez. The ministers would meet until the package of measures was in place and the state of emergency could be imposed in the shortest possible time “with substance and truth,” he said.

There has been unrest in Peru for months

There had previously been riots during protests in Lima. According to Peruvian media reports, dozens of police officers were injured and one demonstrator died from gunfire. According to the newspaper “El Comercio”, Lima’s mayor Renzo Reggiardo asked the president on Thursday evening (local time) to seal off the historic old town because of fears of riots.

Álvarez now cited growing crime in the capital as the reason for the announced state of emergency. He himself was only sworn into office on Tuesday by the new head of state José Jerí.

The country with around 34 million inhabitants has been in political turmoil for months. A week ago, Jerí’s predecessor Dina Boluarte was dismissed due to “moral incompetence” after she was criticized for excessive police violence and the display of expensive watches. Her departure after almost three years as president was preceded by massive protests in which the younger generation in particular made their displeasure with, among other things, violence and corruption clear.
