More than half a million people fled Ukraine before the war. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees is concerned about those who don’t have the means to flee.
According to the UN, 677,000 people have fled to neighboring countries since the Russian attack on Ukraine. Around half had arrived in Poland, said the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, on Tuesday in Geneva.
Around 90,000 are in Hungary and tens of thousands in other neighboring countries such as Moldova, Slovakia and Romania. Within 24 hours, the total had increased by 150,000.
The people who have fled so far probably mostly have families or friends in neighboring countries and, above all, the means to flee, said Grandi. He is very worried about the others, who will certainly need help in the coming days and weeks. The United Nations launched an appeal for donations: According to their own statements, they need almost 1.5 billion euros for humanitarian aid in the Ukraine war.
