Two political celebrities are considering running for office in the USA. Alarm signals for Ukraine. And: changing jobs in your mid-40s? This is what you should pay attention to. The situation in the morning.
Good morning, dear readers,
The next presidential election in the USA is still a long way away. The United States will not elect a new president until 2028. Almost exactly a year after their election defeat, the Democrats appear to be waking up from their trauma. Within a few hours, two renowned politicians announced their candidacy.
After her defeat against Donald Trump, Kamala Harris went into hiding for a long time. She recently came into the spotlight with her book “107 Days,” in which she describes her short election campaign after Joe Biden withdrew. On the “BBC” at the weekend she indicated that her political career might not be over yet. “I’m not done yet,” Harris said. “Possibly” she could become US president one day. This is not yet a commitment to running for office, but it is definitely a sign that the former Vice President wants to make a new attempt.
Donald Trump’s arch enemy is considering running for office
She could face competition from a man who many have had on the list for a long time: Gavin Newsom. The governor of California is the political arch-enemy of Donald Trump’s second term in office and publicly for the first time considered entering the election campaign during an interview with “CBS” on Sunday. When asked by the moderator whether he would consider running for office, Newsom replied: “Yes. Otherwise I would be lying and I can’t do that.”
However, Newsom immediately stated that he would not give any serious thought to it until after the midterm elections next year. You have to win this to stop Donald Trump. “His presidency will end next November if we are successful and take back the House of Representatives.”

Newsom has appeared again and again in the past few months. He appeared to be a staunch advocate against sending the National Guard to democratically governed cities. He repeatedly parodied Donald Trump’s posts on social media. What would speak in favor of Newsom’s candidacy is the schedule: his time as governor ends in January 2027. Newsom cannot seek re-election after two terms.
Almost exactly a year after the elections, the US Democrats seem to be waking up again, because the midterm elections are an opportunity to be more actively involved in US politics again. Since Republicans have a majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, they can largely determine US policy as they please. With a majority in one of the two chambers, the Democrats could have a decisive influence on the plans of Trump and the Republicans.
The decisive factor will then be how far the electoral districts in the USA have changed. Texas has already passed a law that will allow up to five more seats to fall into Republican hands in the future. California will vote on November 4th whether five electoral districts will go to the Democrats as a result of a new designation. It’s also a mood test for Gavin Newsom. If the plan is successful, he could really consider taking the next step after the midterm elections.
Inheriting cash and deposits: This is how it works
It’s like finding a treasure chest: the news of the inheritance of cash, bank accounts and securities. But reaching into the box is not that easy. If you want to make family or friends happy with a windfall of money, you should arrange this ahead of time. Because transferring the values can take a long time, can be complicated in some cases and can cost a lot of inheritance tax.
Who owns a deceased person’s cash? What do you have to consider when transferring a stock portfolio or bank account? And what deadline applies to inheritance tax? We will explain to you how to pass on your assets correctly and what pitfalls there are.
Alarm signals for Ukraine
Winter is approaching. And with this there is growing fear in Ukraine that Vladimir Putin could once again attack the country’s energy infrastructure, the power plants and the refineries. The Europeans are frantically trying to at least provide new money for Kyiv. But this is exactly what the most important EU partners have only just come to terms with.
The dispute over the money issue is just one of several warning signs for Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president. They analyze why we may be experiencing crucial days for him and his country star-Politics chiefs Veit Medick and Jan Rosenkranz.
