Vice Chancellor Habeck’s visit to the USA is marked by the war in Ukraine. He sees Germany in a “serving leadership role” in the future – which resonates with his American colleagues.
According to Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck (Greens), the federal government’s about-face in security policy over the weekend has met with a very positive response in the US government.
“The more Germany serves, the greater its role,” said the Economics and Climate Protection Minister, who is on a two-day visit to Washington. The “willingness to exercise a serving leadership role” is noted with pleasure in the US capital. The hope and expectation is that the willingness to increase military spending and arms deliveries to Ukraine will also be accompanied by a willingness to take on more responsibility within NATO. “And that’s the plan.”
«Freedom should be financed»
In response to the Ukraine war and Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin’s threats against the West, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) announced on Sunday a one-off “special fund” of 100 billion euros and a significant increase in annual defense spending. In the future, more than two percent of the gross domestic product is to be invested in defense every year. The two percent is a NATO target, Germany has been below that for years.
Habeck made it clear that, in addition to higher spending for the Bundeswehr, sufficient funds are now also needed for the energy transition. «In my view, investing in military capabilities and investing in energy independence from Russia are two sides of the same coin. And I would like to make the promise that it will not fail because of the money.” He took up a formulation by FDP leader and finance minister Christian Lindner and explained: “If renewable energies are now “freedom energies”, then freedom should also be financed.”
