The British journalist Sami Hamdi is on a speaking tour in the USA and is arrested by ICE officers. His criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza may have played a role.
The US Immigration Service (ICE) has arrested British journalist and commentator Sami Hamdi. Hamdi has had his visa revoked and plans to deport him, wrote Tricia McLaughlin, deputy secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security, on X. Those who support terrorism and endanger national security are not allowed to visit or work in the country.
A spokeswoman for the British Foreign Office told the PA news agency that the ministry was in contact with the man’s family and local authorities.
Muslim associations criticize ICE
Hamdi was on a lecture tour in the USA and was taken away by ICE officers at San Francisco Airport on Sunday morning (local time), according to a statement from the Association for US-Islamic Relations (CAIR). The reason for his arrest was Hamdi’s criticism of the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza. CAIR announced legal assistance for Hamdi.
The Association of Muslims in Great Britain called on the British government to provide Hamdi with diplomatic assistance. Freedom of the press cannot be selective, the association wrote on X.
