Donald Trump has once again stated that he would “love” to run for a third term. He did not say how he planned to circumvent the constitutional ban.
US President Donald Trump has fueled speculation about a third term in the White House. “I would love to do it,” said the US President on Monday on board the presidential aircraft Air Force One in response to a question. When a reporter asked whether he was ruling out a third term, he responded evasively: “Aren’t I ruling it out? I mean, you have to tell me.”
Donald Trump’s statements fuel debate
The 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution prohibits a third term as president. Some of Trump’s supporters had speculated that he could run for vice president while another candidate runs for president and resigns after the election. Trump ruled this out: “I wouldn’t do that,” he said on the flight from Malaysia to Tokyo. “I think it’s too transparent. I think people wouldn’t like it. It wouldn’t be right.”
Trump’s comments are fueling a debate that is also being pushed forward by some of his allies. His former chief strategist Steve Bannon said in an interview last week that there was a plan to circumvent the 22nd Amendment. “Trump will be president in 2028 and people should just accept that,” Bannon told The Economist magazine. The 79-year-old Trump would already be 82 if he ran for office in 2028. During the 2024 election campaign, he repeatedly made the advanced age of his then-rival Joe Biden an issue.
