Venezuela: USA sends bombers off the coast of the Caribbean country again

Another demonstration of power
US bombers are flying off the coast of Venezuela again

The conflict between the USA and Venezuela continues to intensify. The US Army is once again sending bombers off the coast of the Caribbean country that is seeking help from Russia.

Against the backdrop of tensions between the USA and Venezuela that have been going on for days, two long-range bombers from the US Air Force flew off the coast of the Caribbean country on Monday. As seen on the air traffic tracking portal Flightradar24, the B1-B supersonic aircraft flew parallel to the Venezuelan coast and then turned away again. The two bombers had therefore taken off from a base in the US state of North Dakota.

This is the third demonstration of force of this kind within two weeks. At least one other B1-B bomber appeared near Venezuelan airspace last week. The week before, several B-52 long-range bombers had flown near Venezuela.

US increases military presence around Venezuela

The US military has significantly increased its presence around the Caribbean country in recent weeks. Since August, the Pentagon has sent a total of eight warships, ten F-35 fighter jets and one nuclear submarine to the Caribbean.

According to the Defense Department in Washington, the ships are part of a large-scale operation against drug smuggling that has been ongoing for weeks. In the course of this, the US military has so far fired on ten ships, killing 43 people, according to an AFP analysis of US figures.

US President Donald Trump accuses Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro of controlling drug gangs. The Venezuelan leadership rejects this and accuses the USA of wanting to overthrow the left-wing nationalist government in Caracas.

On Monday it was announced that Russia and Venezuela had entered into a strategic partnership. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the agreement, putting the agreement into force, the Tass news agency reported. The two countries want to expand their cooperation in the areas of energy, mining, transport and security.

“The agreement raises Russian-Venezuelan relations to a fundamentally new level and covers all important areas of bilateral cooperation,” said Russian parliamentary leader Vyacheslav Volodin. Putin and Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro agreed on a strategic partnership during the Venezuelan head of state’s visit to Moscow in May. However, this does not include military assistance in the event of an attack by a third country.
