About 70 people crept onto the dilapidated Rahmedetal Bridge in Lüdenscheid to paint a message on the asphalt. Dedicated to the war-torn people of Ukraine.
Their weapons are paint buckets and paint rollers, their message is an impressive eye-catcher: on the Rahmedetal bridge on the A45 near Lüdenscheid, which is closed and earmarked for demolition, the words “Let’s build bridges” have been written in huge letters since Sunday. Next to it is a Ukrainian national flag painted with peace signs and the hashtag #BRIDGEPLEASE. The lettering is about 300 meters long in total. An internet video by the artist collective Willi & Söhne shows a group of people going onto the bridge early in the morning and then applying paint. The approximately 70 participants see the action as a sign against hate and division and as a sign of togetherness.
A45 bridge closed since December
The A45 bridge, which is very important for traffic, has been closed since December due to its poor condition, which has caused major problems in the region. The consequences for local residents and for the regional economy are massive. Hopes for a fairly quick renovation were dashed, instead a new building had to be built. The case caused a nationwide sensation, and the federal government at least promised accelerated new building planning.
“Monument of Cohesion”
The call to build bridges is ambiguous: on the one hand, the artists refer to the war in Ukraine and the growing influence of enemies of democracy in Europe, on the other hand, they point to economic existential fears in the region as a result of the closed Rahmede Viaduct.
