Quarantine after vacation? Which countries are considered high-risk areas? The rules have changed. Returnees must now take this into account when entering Germany.
The Corona rules for holiday returnees to Germany are becoming easier. As of today, countries are no longer considered high-risk areas with more extensive requirements such as quarantine requirements upon entry, as announced by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).
The background to this are changes to the nationwide entry regulations. According to this, only states and regions are now classified as high-risk areas in which virus variants with “more worrying properties” are rampant than the omicron variant that dominates in this country.
General rules
However, the 3G rule still applies to all entries into Germany, as the Federal Ministry of Health emphasized: Anyone who has not been vaccinated or has recovered must have a negative test. This obligation to provide evidence now applies from the age of twelve instead of six. The RKI also points out that the classification of risk areas can continue to change at short notice. As of Wednesday, around 60 states were still on the RKI list of high-risk areas.
In general, anyone who comes from high-risk areas and has not been fully vaccinated or recovered must be in quarantine for ten days and can only get out of it five days after entry with a negative test at the earliest. The new regulation brings special simplifications for families with children: Children under the age of twelve can now test themselves directly from the quarantine when they return. For children under the age of six, it does not apply to these areas – but not when returning from “virus variant areas”.
In this way, countries can be classified in which variants with particularly threatening properties occur – for example because they largely bypass vaccination protection. According to the RKI list, however, no countries are considered virus variant areas for the time being.
