“The blood of Putin’s war is on their hands,” said Ukraine’s ambassador to the British parliament. He meant: oligarchs. But Prime Minister Boris Johnson is making no progress with sanctions against the super-rich. Does he not dare or are his hands tied?
The British capital is known as “Londongrad” because the super-rich Russians in particular feel at home here, as UK correspondent Uli Oppold reports: “There are entire blocks of streets here that are owned by rich Russians, for example Eaton Square , also known as Red Square, in the Kensington district. There is talk of ten billion euros that oligarchs have invested in the British capital.” And precisely these oligarchs are now to be sanctioned because of their closeness to Vladimir Putin.
Sanctions are not easy to enforce
Probably the best known of them: Roman Abramowitsch. According to flight data, he had all his numerous private jets brought to Russia, or at least to the surrounding area. Our UK correspondent Uli Oppold says Abramovich even wants to retire to Russia altogether. It was more of a voluntary gesture – because most wealthy Russians cannot be forced to leave the country. “If you invest two million pounds here, you get a golden investor visa, which means you can live here indefinitely. (…) If you have this visa and live here more than 180 days a year for five years, then you have the right to apply for British citizenship. That’s why sanctions against Russians are no longer of any use, because they’ll take out their British passports,” said Oppold in the 225th episode of “Today’s Important”.

Are arms deliveries to Ukraine right?
The federal government has now promised Ukraine 2,700 anti-aircraft missiles. There are also 1000 anti-tank weapons and 500 surface-to-air missiles. Since its pledge for 5,000 helmets a week ago, the federal government has taken a completely different course: It is now actually supplying heavy weapons to Ukraine. The only question is: Is this really the right way to keep supplying weapons? The military expert at the Bundeswehr University in Munich, Carlo Masala, says: Definitely! Any sovereign state that is attacked has a right to self-defense. Only the possibilities of the Bundeswehr are as good as used up with their last delivery.
