Ukraine: Zelenskyi has escaped several assassination attempts, according to the report

According to a report in the British newspaper The Times, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy escaped at least three planned assassination attempts in the past week. The saving hints came from an unexpected place.

Two different troops are said to be preparing to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other leading Ukrainians. The Times reports, citing Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, and other security agency officials. Independent verification of the information is difficult.

On the one hand, mercenaries from the private Russian group Wagner are deployed on Selenskyj, on the other hand special forces from the Chechen army. The aim is to “decapitate” the Ukrainian leadership, as the newspaper writes. In fact, since the outbreak of the war, President Zelenskyj has been the embodiment of the resistance and an absolute identification figure for his people. His performances should contribute enormously to the fighting morale of the Ukrainian soldiers.

So far, however, neither the Wagner people nor the Chechens, who apparently operate independently of them, have been able to carry out the bloody mission successfully – despite weeks of planning and preparation. According to the report, information from the Russian domestic secret service FSB probably saved the president’s life. They are said to have come from FSB agents opposed to Russia’s invasion of the neighboring country.

Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy sees himself as “number one target”

Wagner mercenaries as well as Chechens had to accept losses when the plans were foiled. According to The Times, a source close to Wagner said it was “uncanny” how well informed Zelenskyy’s security team was about the plans. According to the report, Danilov told Ukrainian TV channels: “We received this information from the FSB, which does not want to take part in this bloody war”. Danilov said Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov’s elite unit had been “destroyed”.

Despite the losses, another source close to the mercenaries is quoted as saying that there are still around 400 Wagner people in Kyiv alone. There is said to be a list of 24 heads to eliminate. However, they would increasingly come under time pressure. A next plan is therefore already shortly before execution. The Kremlin is not deploying any special military forces because it is easier to distance oneself from an attack by a private mercenary force, they say.

Volodymyr Zelenskyj has seen himself as the “number one target” of the Russian invaders since the beginning of the war. And he seems to be getting more cautious. In the beginning he showed himself more often on the street in videos, but in more recent videos the president is more likely to be seen inside and in front of a meaningless background. “He has an extremely trustworthy team around him and needs to keep moving and changing his communication methods,” writes The Times.
