The Federation Council at a meeting on March 4 approved a law on criminal liability, including for calls for sanctions against Russia, providing for punishment of up to three years in prison.
The bill introduces amendments to the Criminal Code of Russia. Thus, the punishment for calls for sanctions against Russia in the event of a repeated violation involves a fine of up to 500 thousand rubles or up to 3 years in prison.
On Friday, the relevant document was adopted by the State Duma. The amendments also imply responsibility for fakes and discrediting the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. Liability for the public dissemination of knowingly false information about the Russian army involves a fine in the amount of 700 thousand to 1.5 million rubles, or in the amount of the income of the convict for a period of up to 18 months.
Actions to discredit the use of the Russian army in order to protect the interests of the Russian Federation, committed during the year by persons who were previously brought to administrative responsibility for this crime, are fraught with a fine of up to 300 thousand rubles and imprisonment for up to 3 years.
These norms were also adopted in the Federation Council. Now the document will be sent for signature to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The initiative in a conversation with Izvestia was supported by the leader of the all-Russian public organization “Russian Union of Veterans of Afghanistan”, Colonel of the Airborne Forces Franz Klintsevich. The West, according to him, today has rallied and is waging a hybrid war against Russia, including economic, financial and informational. A huge number of fakes appear, in such conditions Russia is forced to act tougher and more decisively.
A similar opinion was expressed on March 3 by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. According to her, Russia is facing information terrorism from the West. The increase in the number of fakes against the background of the operation in Donbass was also noted by the Russian Defense Ministry.
On February 24, Russia launched a special operation to protect Donbass. A few days earlier, the situation in the region escalated significantly due to shelling by the Ukrainian military. The authorities of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics announced the evacuation of residents to the Russian Federation, and also turned to Moscow for help. On February 21, Putin signed a decree recognizing the independence of the DNR and LNR.
