Within the EU, Finland’s President Sauli Niinistö is seen as a kind of link to the Kremlin. Under the impression of the Ukraine war, the country now wants to cooperate more closely with the USA on security issues.
The USA and Finland want to strengthen their security cooperation. This should be done in coordination with other Nordic countries, the White House said after a meeting between US President Joe Biden and his Finnish colleague Sauli Niinistö.
The presidents also discussed the importance of NATO’s open-door policy, it said. Finland is the EU country with the longest national border with Russia. The country is not a NATO member, but a close partner of the military alliance. Finland is also seen as an important link in the very tense relationship between the European Union and the Kremlin. Niinistö is sometimes described as a kind of understander of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Really living in very difficult times”
“Finland is an important partner of the United States, also a strong defense partner, a partner of NATO, especially in terms of the strength and security of the Baltic Sea region,” Biden said earlier at the White House meeting.
Biden said it was agreed that the Russian invasion of Ukraine was not just an attack on Ukraine, but an attack on European security and global peace and stability. “We really live in very difficult times,” emphasized Niinistö.
At the meeting with his Finnish colleague, Biden also recalled a statement by ex-US President Barack Obama and laughed. He said that if everything was left to the Nordic countries, everything would be fine, said Biden. “As a rule, we don’t start wars,” Niinistö reacted. Obama had said in 2016: “I really believe that the world would be safer and more prosperous if we had more partners like our Nordic countries.”
