Armistice: Russia: Ceasefire on humanitarian corridor in Mariupol

During the night the mayor of Mariupol expressed hope for a temporary ceasefire. Now a signal comes from Moscow.

The Russian military has ordered a ceasefire on humanitarian corridors in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol and in the city of Volnovakha.

The ceasefire will come into effect at 8:00 a.m. (CET) so that civilians can leave the encircled cities, the Russian Defense Ministry said, according to the Interfax agency. “The humanitarian corridors and routes out have been agreed with the Ukrainian side,” the ministry said in Moscow.

The mayor of Mariupol, Wadym Boitschenko, had expressed the hope on Saturday night that a humanitarian corridor would soon be set up from the city with 440,000 inhabitants and that a ceasefire would be declared for it. The humanitarian corridor was intended to bring food and medicine into the city and repair important infrastructure.

The mayor had spoken of a city blockade. Even on the ninth day of the war, Ukrainian forces would not have let the “invaders” into the city. The city has been suffering from “relentless attacks” from the Russian side for five days. Residents previously said they had virtually no water, electricity or gas.

On Thursday, during negotiations in western Belarus, a Russian and a Ukrainian delegation agreed on humanitarian corridors in particularly hard-fought areas of Ukraine. However, on Friday the warring parties accused each other of obstructing escape corridors for civilians.
