The Ukrainian government is demanding heavy weaponry and enforcing a no-fly zone over the war zone. Above all, NATO rejects the latter. The CDU welcomes this.
The CDU defense politician Henning Otte believes it is right to reject Ukraine’s demands for a NATO no-fly zone and for the delivery of heavy weapons.
“Here it must be weighed very well, with a hot heart, but with a cool mind,” said Otte on Saturday on Deutschlandfunk. The Russian attack on Ukraine is not a NATO alliance case. “We must not become a war party.”
Germany has delivered defensive weapons to Ukraine and this is already having an effect, the CDU politician added. For this reason, Russian President Vladimir Putin does not currently dare to storm the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv. Otte also opposed a no-fly zone over the war zone, as this would have to be enforced by force of arms.
Ukraine had recently requested such a no-fly zone over the war zone from NATO. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had rejected this again on Friday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted to this with disappointment.
