Escape: More than 100 people rescued in the Mediterranean

Thousands are not only fleeing from Ukraine to the EU, people are also continuing to try to get to Europe via the Mediterranean. Dozens were rescued from drowning this morning.

Private aid organizations have rescued more than 100 people from distress at sea in the central Mediterranean. The crew of the “Geo Barents” rescued 80 people from a floating inflatable boat in the morning, as the organization Doctors Without Borders announced on Twitter on Saturday.

According to their own statements, the Spanish sea rescuers from Open Arms brought almost 30 people to safety from an overcrowded wooden boat that was in danger of sinking. The boat migrants had left the coast of Libya.

Time and again, people from North Africa dare the dangerous crossing towards Italy or Malta to get to the EU because they hope for a better life there. According to the Italian Ministry of the Interior, just over 5,470 migrants arrived in boats on the coast of Italy as of Thursday this year. This number is slightly higher than the same period last year (around 5300).
