Health: Health insurance contributions could increase in 2023

Corona costs – also the health insurance companies. Therefore, the premiums could rise again soon. But the pandemic is not the only reason.

Members of the statutory health insurance funds could face increasing contributions in 2023. Health Minister Karl Lauterbach told the Funke media group that with an expected deficit in the health insurance funds of around 17 billion euros next year, this cannot be completely avoided.

At the same time, the SPD politician emphasized: “We will try to spread the burden on several shoulders – by using efficiency reserves, adjusting the reserves of the health insurance companies and increasing the tax subsidy.” Without an additional cash injection, significant increases in contributions would be unavoidable.

Lauterbach said of the reasons for the financial gap expected next year: “During the last legislature, we significantly improved the benefits for those with statutory health insurance. It costs.” In addition, with the Corona crisis, income with even more serious consequences collapsed. “The scissors are getting wider and wider.” The coalition will react to this shortly with a financing law for statutory health insurance.

This year, the cash registers are already receiving a significantly increased subsidy of 28.5 billion euros from the federal budget. This is intended to keep the average additional contribution stable at 1.3 percent for the time being. The health insurers themselves determine the specific amount of their additional contribution; they can deviate from the average value. The total contribution also includes the general rate of 14.6 percent of gross wages.
