War against Ukraine: At least 37,800 Ukrainian refugees in Germany

Putin’s troops continue to advance into Ukraine. More and more people are fleeing the war – including to Germany. An exact number cannot be given due to the lack of border controls.

The number of Ukrainian war refugees seeking protection in Germany has again increased significantly. According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the federal police had already registered 37,786 Ukrainian refugees by Sunday – almost 10,000 more than the previous day.

A spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior again pointed out that the actual number of war refugees from the Ukraine who entered Germany could be significantly higher, since the data from the Federal Police would only show a part of the refugees, also due to the lack of border controls. “Since there are no border controls, the number of war refugees who have entered Germany can actually be significantly higher,” it said. According to the information, the number of people fleeing the war zone in Ukraine has been recorded since the start of the Russian attacks on February 24.

1.3 million people fled Ukraine

According to estimates by the UN refugee agency UNHCR and based on the figures updated again at the weekend, more than 1.3 million people had fled Ukraine by Friday, most of them to Poland. According to the Polish border guard, around 922,400 refugees have arrived from the neighboring country so far. On Saturday alone, 129,000 people crossed the border, the authority announced on Twitter. On Sunday there were already 39,800 by morning.

According to data from the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the majority of the refugees are Ukrainian citizens. But there are also people from Uzbekistan, Belarus, India, Nigeria, Algeria, Morocco, the USA and several other countries.
