War in Ukraine: US Secretary of State Blinken in Moldova

“We strongly support Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as its constitutionally guaranteed neutrality,” said Blinken at a joint press conference with Moldovan President Maia Sandu.

The US has mobilized a global response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, he added. “Whenever and wherever such aggression is shown, we will do the same.” At the same time, Blinken Moldova promised help in caring for refugees from Ukraine and thanked the country for taking them in. According to Blinken, 240,000 people from Ukraine have arrived there, mostly women and children.

Moldova itself has only about 2.6 million inhabitants. The former Soviet republic borders Ukraine and has had a conflict with the independent Transnistria region since the early 1990s.
