War in Ukraine: Russia: 2000 arrests at anti-war demonstrations

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, people in Russia have taken to the streets to demonstrate against it. Arrests are made every day.

According to civil rights activists, around 2,000 people were arrested during renewed demonstrations against the war in Ukraine.

More than 200 people each were taken into custody on Sunday in Novosibirsk in Siberia and in Yekaterinburg in the Urals, the Owd-Info organization said on Telegram. The team of the imprisoned Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny published videos on YouTube – including one of a group of older women shouting “No to war!” to shout.

According to the authorities, a prisoner transporter in which 24 arrested demonstrators and 5 police officers were sitting crashed in Moscow in the afternoon. Nine people were injured, it said, including six civilians. Pictures on social networks showed a completely destroyed vehicle. It was initially unclear how the accident happened.

The Russian authorities have not approved the rallies and have repeatedly cracked down on demonstrators critical of the Kremlin. Since the start of the Russian attack on Ukraine, several thousand people have been arrested in the largest country in the world by area, according to Owd-Info.
