The most famous Russian opposition member is in prison. But Alexei Navalny’s team is calling for further protests against the war of aggression in Ukraine – on International Women’s Day.
Jailed Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny’s team has called on Russian women to take to the streets on Tuesday’s International Women’s Day against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
At 2:00 p.m. Moscow time (12:00 p.m. CET), women should protest in central squares in their home towns, Navalny’s spokeswoman Kira Jarmysch said in a video message. International Women’s Day on March 8th is a holiday in Russia when women are traditionally given flowers.
Women should not hide in this war. “Women don’t disappear when the war starts,” said Jarmysch. “They carry as great a burden in war as men – if not more.” On Women’s Day, women should therefore show that their opinion is to be reckoned with. “We don’t want this war. We want it to end immediately.”
Demonstrations against the war in Ukraine had already taken place in numerous Russian cities on Sunday. According to new information from the civil rights organization Owd-Info, 5,075 people in 70 cities were arrested on Monday. According to the state agency TASS, a court in St. Petersburg sentenced an American to seven days in prison for taking part in an unauthorized demonstration.
A video by the Navalny team showed militia officers also taking old women away. In all, the organization counted more than 13,400 arrests at anti-war demonstrations in Russia since the war began on February 24.
